Lincoln Wear Mexboro’ Down

Lincoln 5, Mexboro’ 1

A fine defensive display did not avail Mexborough when they visited Lincoln on Saturday and they conceded both points to the team which inflicted upon Denaby the only defeat they have so far sustained this season.

The home team had a first team defender in their side in Worthy, who had not travelled with the premier side on account of an injury. A good crowd saw Lincoln take the initiative from the start and Capstick had to be on the alert when Atkinson and Read went close with dangerous headers. Laterhe made a smart save from Keetley, and Mexboro’s first advance was checked when Perry got too far up and was blown offside.

Read led the Lincoln attack in thrustful and aggressive style and Liversidge did well on several occasions in keeping him at bay. A left wing attack by Mexboro’ brought the Lincoln goalkeeper into action for the first time, but he had little difficulty in dealing with Moxon’s shot.

Mexboro’ could not sustain pressure and were soon on the defensive again. Capstick twice having to save at full length from Read and later doing well to get his fist to a high shot from Cartwright.

Mexboro’s attacks were few and far between and the Lincoln backs had an easy time.

However, the visitors were occasionally dangerous in breakaways and from one of these Perry made Poskitt go full length to clear his low shot, while just before the interval the Lincoln defenders were caught napping and FISHER slipped through to give Mexboro’ the lead.

Mexboro’ held this lead at half-time but in the second half the superior staying power of the home team was evident, and playing splendid football they obtained five goals, Mexboro’ being unable to do more than defend doggedly.

The scorers for Lincoln were KEETLEY (2), READ (2) and BURNICLE.
