Mexborough Pull Plug out of Kiveton’s League Lead

Kiveton Park 0, Mexborough Town 2

Mexborough Town really struck it rich on Saturday, retaining their winning form with a convincing 2-0 away victory in the Yorkshire League top of the table clash at Kiveton Park.

The league leaders, beaten only once in the league this season before Saturday’s clash. were never allowed to, get into their stride; as the hard-running Mexborough team gained ample revenge for the 3-1- drubbing by Kiveton earlier in the season.

Steve Toyne, making a welcome return to the first team after his six months lay-off, struck his old form straight away in a goal-less first half in which Mexborough looked by far the more dangerous outfit.

Indeed, Town were unlucky not to walk off at half-time with a one-goal lead, for what looked like a perfectly good effort from Parker was disallowed, pre- sumably for off-side. This was only one of several decisions by the referee which left players on both sides bewildered and which marred an otherwise entertaining first-half.

On the restart, the home team began to tire in the heavy conditions, and Mexborough’s fitness soon began to pay dividends as they piled on the pressure.

A fine solo effort by Pat Cullen, always a danger to the leg-weary Kiveton defence, gave the visitors a well-deserved lead in the 65th minute.

This seemed to be the signal for the home side to move more into the attack however, and for the first time in the game the Mex-borough defence was put under pressure, but Malcolm Brunt gave the home team forwards no joy as he turned in yet another fine performance in the Mexborough goal.

Kiveton kept up the pressure, out when it looked as if they might snatch an injury-time equaliser. Whitehouse broke away for Mexborougb and his low cross from the wing found Cullen, who made sure of the result by taking the ball, the goalkeeper and everything before him into the net.
