“Introductions” Near the Thai Border
Not exactly “friends of the familyā€¯ are these two elephants seen introducing themselves to driver Dennis Watson of 13 Windhill Crescent, Mexborough.
Driver Watson. serving a six-year arrangement with the R.A.S.C., met the elephants while driving an Army Public Relations team on an assignment In North Malaya, near the Thai border.
Everything went well until it was time to more off, when the two elephants (from a nearby circus), were not keen on losing their new found friend. started to curl their trunks round the Land Rover.
Dennis, a former pupil of Mexborough Adwick Road County Secondary School, worked under ground at Denaby Main Colliery before joining the Forces, but, always keen of learning to drive, he joined the R.A.S.C. in August 1958.
After completing three months’ training at Aldershot, he was posted, to Malaya, when he is a driver attached to Public Relations at Ipoh, North Malaya. He has another 24 months of a three-year tour in Malay to complete before his family expect him home on leave.
On this, his first Christmas away from home, Dennis has not forgotten his parents. Mr. and Mrs. A. Watson, for this week the family received Christmas package containing a large hand-made Malayan musical jewellery box.
Speaking to the ‘South Yorkshire Times.’ Mrs. Watson said Dennis was enjoying his life in the Army. and was particularly pleased with his work as a driver.
