Mexboro’ Church Annual Meeting

Mexborough Parish Church annual meeting in the Parish Hall on Sunday night was well attended

The Vicar announced the retirement of Mr. James Shillito from the office of Vicar’s Warden and paid tribute to his faithful, loyal and courageous service.

Mr. Harold Smith accepted the post of Vicar’s Warden with Mr. Norman Belk elected as People’s Warden.

Mr. Albert Frost, Church Treasurer, presented the accounts and also the budget for 1960, which set the target for increased contributions towards the church overseas and £100 contribution towards a new church to be bult in the Sheffield diocese

The report of the electoral roll by the Secretary, Mr. Peter Cook, showed an increased membership of 50.

Mr. Belk spoke of the work to be done on the outside of the church with the financial assistance of the Friends of the Parish Church.

Memorable Year

The Vicar, Mr. J. Metcalfe in his report said the year had been “memorable”, largely because of the Mission in the spring. He mentioned various experiments which had been tried such as a Parish Meeting, the learning night and the Bible study night, and expressed hope for future developments. He spoke of the church’s role in the fight against the materialism of the times.

To fill the vacancies on the Church Council, Mr. K. Lee, Mrs. E. Cropper, Mrs. L. Charles, Miss E. Jubb, and Miss D. Wright were elected, and to the list of sidesmen the names of Messrs. K. Whiteley, H. Frost, K. Lee, J. Tordoff, H. Brayshaw, J. Bates, and L. Glover were added.
