Harry Dobson – Actor, Stage Manager, Director Producer

For 20 Years Mr. Harry Dobson, Mexborough has been actor, stage manager and later director producer on South Yorkshire’s amateur stage. He has been associated with the old Swinton Players and  Mexborough Truth Society and with the Green Room Club, WathTheatre Club and Mexborough Theatre Guild. The Theatre Club and the Guild he organised and founded.

In just over 12 months the Theatre Guild, of which he Is producer, have presented six plays. Mr. Dobson has produced Galsworthy, Ibsen, Shakespeare, Priestley and many other famous playwrights. His production are particularly impressive for their attention to detail and for his happy ability of getting the best out of his colleagues.

Mr. Dobson has produced more than 50 full-length plays. Between 1943-6 he was a member of the local C.E.M.A. committee and be has been drama class tutor at evening institutes at Mexborough, Swinton, Wath and Brampton. Thus year he will have a new experience: drama festival adjudication at Doncaster Methodists’ festival.

Last season he missed an experience: Invited to be professional producer for one of the Leeds Arts Theatre Production he had to decline . . . . . .  he was busy with Mexborough Theatre Guild’s initial production, “Wuthering Heights
