Gainsborough Lucky to Win.

Gainsborough Trinity commenced their Eastertide programme by luckily defeating   Mexborough 2 —1, after a hard-fought game

Mexborough created a surprise in the first few minutes by taking the lead. Lawless, a young player on trial from Kilnhurst, scoring shortly afterwards, however, Gainsborough gained a lucky goal. Robinson’s shot cannoning Wheatley, the opposing right back, into the net.

Just before the interval, however, McCann, Gainsborough’s outside-left, smartly netted from a pass.

Mexborough fought hard in the second half get on level terms, but were met by a stout defence in which both Kell and Harris were prominent.

Barnsley Player Taken to Hospital.

Barnsley Reserves gained a well-deserved victory over Wombwell by 3—1, for they were without Harvey, their left half-back, for the last 15 minutes. He received a cut over the eye after a collision with Ward, the Wombwell goalkeeper, and the wound necessitated his removal to the Barnsley Beckett Hospital, where he was detained.

Ward and Hopkins were outstanding for Wombwell in defence, while Briggs was prominent in their attack.

For Barnsley, Hill, the new forward from Newark, showed many clever touches, while Chivers was always a hard worker.

Denaby Leave It Late.

Denaby United  3  Frickley Colliery 1

United left it late to beat, Frickley  Colliery at Denaby, scoring twice in seven minutes.

Gibson scored for Frickley in the first minute, Moss, who was tripped, headed through for Denaby as he was falling, but the referee gave a penalty, Adams shooting over from the kick. Moss equalised just afterwards, Adams added a second from a corner, and Wraith scored Denaby’s third goal from a centre from the right.
