Thrice Grickley got the lead in the stirring game at South Elmsall on Saturday, and thrice Mexhoro’ fought back and equalised—so strongly on the last occasion did they rally that Frickley were defending desperately in the last few minutes. The game was played out grimly and at no period could anyone feel a certainty of the result. In some respects Frickley were unfortunate to be forced to a replay; for Mexboro’ twice scored through indecision-and fumbling in the Frickley goal. On the other hand the second half was distinctly Mexboro’s and for the football they they deserved something better than defeat.

Frickley looked like getting goals from the start and appearances were quickly justified for Appleyard took Binney’s pass to score a good goal after five minutes or so. Frickley’s well-judged swinging of the ball from wing to wing and wing to centre at a fine pace got the Mexhoro’ defence tottering. The halves were outpaced, the backs over-run; into the breach dashed a virile set of forwards to send in shot after shot. But in the breach remained ono heroic defender. Joe Bromage (picture)  alone saved Mexboro’ and baulked Frickley in the first quarter of the game. One piece of work, when the Frickley men for a full minute had the goal at their mercy, was magnificent. In ten seconds he saved four shots at close range.
