Mr. Gerald Fell

Gerald Fell was signed by Mexboro’ during the close season with the object of making good the weakness which the absence of an experienced player in the side had made manifest in the previous season, and few players could have been found with better qualifications to fill that position.

After playing with an Elsecar team in junior football for a spell he joined the Army at the age of 16. He did not start his career as a professional footballer until after the war, joining Barnsley in March 1920.

At Oakwell he took his place in the succession of outstanding centre halves which the club brought to the fore, about that time. Barson, who later helped Aston Villa to win the Cup, and Beaumont, the Mexboro’ man being prominent in this list. Fell remained with Barnsley until 1922 when he was transferred to Bradford with whom he stayed six years for four of which he captained the team.

While with Bradford he made 130 consecutive appearances in League and Cup matches. From Bradford he went to Chesterfield which whom he played in all possible matches until 1929 when he was transferred to Gainsboro’. He served the Midland League club as captain and centre-half of the rugged type Fell shines most in defence, positions himself well out and always keeps cool in a tight corner. He is not so fast as he was but he makes his head save his legs.

“I am not 40 and there is a good deal of football left in me yet,” he told our interviewer with a smile. As a matter of fact he is 34, and is therefore no older than a number of players who are still reckoned among the best in the First Division.
