Mexborough: Stead (Roman Terrace); Beverley, Wilburn (Adwick Road); Chapel (Dolcliffe Road), Reader (Swinton National), Walker (Chadwick Road,); West (Roman Terrace), Gittins (Swinton bridge), Hobson (Mexborough National), Jackson (Kilnhurst Council), Beard (Garden Street)

For the second time this season Mexborough schoolboys were at home on Saturday, on the Mexborough Athletic ground. They gave a better display than that against Pontefract. For one thing Bradford played better football than Pontefract, but Mexborough were comfortable superior still. The attendance of about 2,000 was pleasing and suggest that Mexborough next season might play their usual complement of “home” matches.

Mexborough regained the lead in the first four minutes, Gittins passed well forward and Pickles were plenty of time run out to clear. He fumbled the ball and Jackson deftly got it and shot into an empty goal.

15 minutes later the second goal came – by far the more spectacular goal of the afternoon. The combined movement by Mexborough resulted in Gittins being left on the wing about 20 yards from goal take acute angle he screwed the ball high up to goal and dropped just over the line completely deceiving Pickles.

In the second half Bradford weakened and were gradually worn down by the strong pace Mexborough setup. Jackson scored a third goal after about 15 minutes with a hard drive.

Near the finish Mexborough attacked and Reader headed into the goalmouth for Jackson to score his third goal.

The Mexborough and district schoolboys will visit Penistone in the third round on January 29.
