Mexborough Men’s Escapes in Fog Collision.

Three coal trucks and a guard’s van were derailed and fourth coal waggon was damaged when a light engine ran into the rear of a goods train shortly after 1 a.m. yesterday on the up line of the London and North Eastern Railway near Kilnhurst station.

The mishap resulted in considerable traffic disorganisation and the north down-trains to Manchester wore diverted via Penistone. The line was cleared in time for the 7.30 train through to Mexborough.

The light shunting engine which ran into the rear of the goods train, tender first, did not leave the rails.

The driver, C. Patman, of 37, Lorna Road, Mexborough, and the fireman, W. Lancashire, of 33, Albert Road, Mexborough were thrown against the tender and received cuts on the head. They were taken home and their injuries were dressed.

It is believed that the accident was caused by the fog.
