Early Morning Blaze – Cattle Saved, but Crops Burnt

December 1928

Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Wednesday 05 December 1928

Early Morning Blaze.

Cattle Saved, but Crops Burnt at Mexborough.

Early this morning a fierce fire broke out at Mr. W. Arnold’s farm, Doncaster Road, Mexborough, and cattle were removed hurriedly from farm buildings.

The flames were first noticed shortly after midnight, and in less than five minutes the blaze enveloped a large Dutch barn, which was filled with the produce of the recent harvest. The farmhouse was also endangered. The outbreak, however, was extensive, and involved tne destruction property at an estimated loss between £1,500 and £2,000.

The origin of the fire is at present unknown. It had hardly started before it was observed by Police-sergeant Wigglesworth, who liberated several cows from the outhouses, which were in danger.

The Mexborough Fire Brigade were quickly on the scene under Superintendent Grainger, and the outbreak was practically confined to the Dutch barn.
