Drunk and Refusing to Quit Licensed Premises at Mexboro’

Samuel Bland, collier, of Mexboro’, was charged with being disorderly and refusing to quit.

The defendant did not appear, but was represented by his wife, who stated that her husband was confined to his bed.

Police-sergeant Gunn deposed to leaving the summons at the defendant’s house.

Samuel Hawk stated that he kept the Miners’ Inn, Doncaster-road, Mexboro’, and on the 31st December, just before eight o’clock in the evening, the defendant came in and soon created a disturbance by quarrelling with an old man. He ordered the defendant out, but he said he was not doing wrong and would not go. Witness asked him a second time, but he still persisted in causing a disturbance for some time, eventually taking his exit.

The defendant was fined £1 1s. 6d., including costs; fourteen days’ imprisonment in default.

Absalom Bland, collier, Mexboro’, was charged with being drunk and refusing to quit the same house.

The defendant said he had not drunk more than a pint of beer all the day.

Police-sergeant Gunn said the man was decidedly intoxicated.

The defendant, who had appeared in the month of November last for being drunk and disorderly, was fined 10s. and 15s. costs.
