Mexborough’s Spirited Rally.

Chesterfield Reserves 3 Mexborough Athletic  3

The meeting of Chesterfield Reserves and Mexborough Athletic at Saltergate produced a ding-dong struggle and a draw of  3 – 3 was a fitting result, if only for the visitors’ spirited rally in the closing stages.

The teams showed dissimilar styles. Chesterfield choosing the close game and Mexborough open work. The home team had several players on trial —Barker, at inside-left. Thorpe let centre halfback, and Hill (H. C.) in goal—and these did very well. Mexborough were well served their defence and the inside forwards. Fleetwood and Boland raided strongly. Jones, who took Renton’s place, did clever work on the right wing.

Orr scored Chesterfield’s three goals, and Mexborough’s scorers were Fleetwood, Jones, and Coleman.

Doncaster Rovers Reserves 3  Wombwell  3

A finely contested game at Doncaster brought the home season to close, and if Wombwell were fortunate to win, credit must be given them for taking chances and fighting gallantly against the fast and clever Rovers’ attack, which times in the first half exerted considerable pressure.

Wombwell were finely served by Ward, Johnson, and Hobson during an anxious time, and if it was against the run of the game when Ashmore opened the score, they developed a better understanding than the Rovers. After Pattison had failed with penalty for the Rovers, Waring added a second for the visitors in the second half.

Ashmore, Briggs, and Waring were prominent for Wombwell, and Clarke, France, Wilkins, Flowers. Beresford, and Renshaw were the Rovers.

Denaby Surprise Scunthorpe.

Scunthorpe United  3  Denaby United  3

Scunthorpe United had a hard struggle to share the points with Denaby at Scunthorpe. The visitors surprised Scunthorpe in the first half by getting three goals, Moss (two) and Adams scoring, and their interval lead was well deserved.

In the second hall Scunthorpe rallied and had better of the exchanges, subsequently equalising through goals by Hubbard, Tucker, and Brown.

It was an interesting game, with Denaby serving up much better football than their position League table would indicate. Scunthorpe United gave trial a new centre-forward named Brown, from the Mansfield district.
