Linesmen Didn’t Turn Up

For Mexboro’s Top of the Table Clash

Bridlington Trinity 4, Mexborough Town 3

With key man Pat Cullen suffering from an attack of ‘flu on Satursay, Mexborough were forced to field a re-arranged team for their vital to the table clash with Bridlington Trinity, but came close to taking a point from the sea-siders, who have suffered only one league defeat this season.

Mexborough’s game was disrupted even more by the failure of the linesmen to turn up, for this meant that any plans to play an off-side game were rather risky under the circumstances.

Mexboro’ Lead

Even so Town took the lead after 15 minutes, when Whitehouse worked his way through the middle, slipped three tackles and rammed the ball home. Centre-forward Tomlinson however, who brought about the downfall of Mexborough, with a hat-trick, hit his first five minutes later when his shot bounced in off a post.

Just before half time Steele lost the hall in his own penalty are3 and it was Tomlinson who popped up to give Bridlington the lead with a header.

In the second half Town had to come out more and, as so often happens, this gave Bridlington a chance to break away through Tomlinson, who ran through the middle to complete his hat trick.

Ding-Dong Battle

Glossop set Mexborough’s hopes of a point alight again when he ran in from the left wing and lobbed the ball over the outcoming ‘keeper to make it 3-2.

Hemingway put the home side two up once more, but with 15 minutes to go Town again hit back through the in form Whitehouse, who crowned another solo effort for Town’s third goal to complete a memorable performance over the holiday period.

In spite of continuous pressure in the last 15 minutes, however, Town were unable to grab an equaliser, but will be seeking revenge in the return match at Hampden Road tomorrow (Saturday).

Their chances could be spoilt by injuries to Parker, Glossop, Wood and Cook, who are all fighting to regain fitness.
