Bouquets for Mexboro’.

The Mexborough Athletic Club came in for quite a lot of compliments on Saturday. They tackled their first chance of staging an important inter-association match in the Northern Counties Amateur Championship with a determination to give satisfaction to all concerned; and they fully succeeded. The officials of both the Sheffield and Manchester Associations were highly pleased with their reception, the an organisation and the warm hospitality with which they were met.

That last is a point on which Mexboro’ can score every time. They, did so on Saturday with the result that both associations are hoping to come again for big occasions. Certainly the Mexboro’ Club left nothing undone to show their appreciation of the distinction given them; and at the dinner at Sheffield after the match some very complimentary toasts in their honour were drunk.

The “gate” by the way amounted to £37, representing an attendance of roughly 2,600. The quality of the football however, would probably assure a much bigger attendance next time.

Mr G. W. Bramhan, Chairman of the Mexboro’ Urban Council, marking a notable occasion — the first on which an important amateur championship game has been allocated to the Mexboro’ Athletic ground — by a civic welcome to the Sheffield and Manchester Association teams in front of the pavilion just before the kick-off.
