And Another – Joe Beresford (Aston Villa)

And Another.

Baxter’s former partner at Mexboro’ has also made good. Joe Beresford, also a member of Mexboro’s Midland League championship side, and the scorer of over 100 goals in three seasons with that club, went to Mansfield with Baxter, and in the summer that saw Baxter’s departure for higher class, went one better , even than he by getting on the books of Aston Villa.

He also got his Football League chance much earlier and has never lost his place in the Aston Villa team since he gained it early this season.

This little youngster who, seven years ago, was spotted by Mexboro’s officials as the dominating figure in a Montagu Cup final at Hampden Road, has travelled a long way since he left Askern Road for higher spheres; and on Saturday “Harricus” wrote of him in the “Athletic News”:

“Singularly, the most successful of the forwards, Beresford, was more or less an individualist, and his goal was the reward of a true exhibition of dribbling which ended in his practically walking the ball into the net. Beresford has more tnan justified his promotion to the Villa side.”
