Wright Scores Four More Goals

Mexborough Grand – Beat Leeds, lost to Attercliffe

A brilliant display by W. Wright was the feature of the return game between Grand and Leeds, at Mexborough on Friday. The Mexborough side won by the handsome score of 8-3, thus completing the “double” and Wright was responsible for four goals.

In addition to this, Wright played a large part in the scoring of all the others, obtained by Cauwood and Gable, and went near to increasing his total on several occasions. His stickwork was delightful to watch, while the manner in which he and the other members of the attack combined, was delightful to see. Wright is undoubtedly one of the Grand’s best players, if not the best, and if he can maintain his present form, the club can look forward to more successes with confidence.

At Attercliffe on Tuesday, Mexborough Grand opposed the Sheffield side’s Scarboro’ cup winning team of last year and experienced all the bad luck that was going. In the first ten minutes of their game, Wright hit an upright on three occasions. Graham struck the crossbar, and Linsday also went near with good shots; and the goalkeeper was completely beaten every time.

Attercliffe eventually won by 3-1, but if the score had been reversed it would have been a much truer reflection of the game. Attercliffe defended desperately for long periods on end and all their goals were scored during rare attacks on the Grand goal. The return game takes place at Mexboro’ to-night, bully-off at 8-45. Grand are confident that they will reverse the decision.
