A ‘Bus Accident

February 1916

Mexborough and Swinton Times, February 26, 1916

A party, numbering about 30 members of the Wesleyan Brotherhood, had a somewhat startling experience on Saturday night last. We have been visiting the Wesleyan Church, Mexborough, assisting in an open-air and indoor mission services, along with the Rev Joseph Mee and Capt Davies, both of Doncaster.

Mr A Tempest was in charge of the party. They were conveyed to Mexborough in Mr Brown’s motor charabanc.

On their return journey on the Adwick Road, Mexborough, they encountered a man who had been having a “jolly time.” The driver blew his horn for all he was worthe, Mr Tempest explained to our representative. The man was whirling from one site to the other of the narrow road, and in trying to negotiate successfully past him, unfortunately, the car was driven off the main road, into a ploughed field.

The wheels of the car sank deeper into the earth, and it was impossible to extricate the vehicle. Fortunately no one was hurt, it was a most remarkable experience.

The party had to get out of the car, and some of them made to Swinton station, others to Bolton, where they caught the last train, arriving in Moorthorpe about 12 PM. We understand it was necessary to procure the assistance of a traction engine to extricate the car, which returned to South Kirby on Monday no worse for the experience.
