Soldier – Browes, Horace – Died of Wounds

January 1918

Mexborough and Swinton Times January 12, 1918

Private Horace Browes
Durham Light Infantry

Private Browes has died of wounds received in action in France.

He was 23, single, and his home was with his sister, Mrs. Lee, of 4, Hallgate, Mexboro’.

Mrs. Lee has received the following letter from the hospital in which her brother died: “I regret to inform you that your brother, who was admitted to hospital on December 4, suffering from gunshot wounds in the back and abdomen, died on December 4.

I can assure you that everything that was possible was done to try and save him, hut he gradually became weaker, and passed away in his sleep. I am sorry there is so little I can tell you of your brother’s last moments. He was such a short time in hospital, and was too ill to send a message. He has been laid to rest in —– Military Cemetery, and there will be a cross with his name and regiment on to mark his resting-place.”
