400 in Barnburgh May Walk

Two new records were set up by parishioners of Mexborough and Denaby Catholic Churches when they visited Barnburgh on Sunday. They were taking part in the first Catholic May procession ever held in the village, and were also the largest body of Catholics to visit it in more than 400 years.

Almost 400 people, who had travelled to Barnburgh in a fleet of special buses, took part in the procession which it is hoped to make an annual event.

Three queens took part in the procession The May Queen of Barnburgh was Ann Jennifer Ganley, of Harlington, who crowned the statue of Our Lady during Benediction. Her attendants were Marie Chadburn, Mary Wagstaff and Ellen Geraghty. Margaret Axe, of Mex-borough, was Infant Queen, attended by Pauline Beardsley, Anna Roach and Margaret Seagrave. The May Queen of Mexborough, Christine Glennon, was attended by Margo Turpin, Christine Bell and Sheila Lavelle. Cushion bearer was Ellen Gillespie.

Fr. J. Palframan, of Denaby, gave Benediction in the Memorial Hall, at which Fr. E. Heeran, of Mexborough, preached. During his sermon, Fr. Heeran thanked Barnburgh parishioners for their work in connection with the procession.
