New Councillors – Mr G W Jepps

Mr G.W. Jepps, who secured election to the council at his first attempt is a native of Barnsley. He moved from Barnsley to Stairfoot where he was in the employ of the old M.S. and L Railway company, and later become yard foreman at Wombwell, moving to Wath when Wath Hump was opened in 1908.

By this time in the service of the great Central Railway, he moved unto Mexborough as traffic Foreman 30 years ago.

In 1923 Mr Jepps left the railway to go into business on his own and has since built up an extensive connection as a coal dealer and haulage contractor.

He is at present president of the Mexborough chamber of trade and vice president of the Mexborough Rotary club. But he has helpfully associated himself with most organisations in the town at one time or another, and has the reputation of never refused a request for assistance from any good cause.

In his early days he was a prominent N.U.R member, and acted on many occasions as branch delegate he is helping with their arrangements for the forthcoming Mexborough railway exhibition for the Montagu hospital.

Mr Jepps is also a section leader in the special Constabulary.
