Well-Known Butcher’s Death

Mexborough trade circles and many residents heard with regret of the death, which occurred on Tuesday at his home, following a seizure last Friday, of a well-known Mexborough butcher, Mr. Jacob Rawson, of 41, Wath Road.

Mr. Rawson was in his 80th year.

A prominent businessman in the Mexborough, Wath and Swinton districts for over 50 years, he was for 15 years a member of Swinton Council a leading dog fancier and breeder, a keen pigeon fancier and in his younger days a prominent local sprinter.  Born at Woolley Edge, he came as a child to Wath, where his father, the late Mr. Thomas Rawson, was for the latter part of his life a farmer.  Apprenticed to butchery, Mr. Rawson set up his own business, first at Townend, Wath and later in York Street, West Melton.

He moved to his present shop in Mexborough 41 years ago.  For many years he had bee vice-president of Mexborough, Swinton, and District Butchers’ Association.  During the last war he was President and buyer for Swinton and Kilnhurst Butchers’ Association.

Elected to Swinton Council, when Roman Terrace was in the Swinton area, he served for 15 consecutive years. Mr. Rawson had the distinction of taking all six classes for fox terriers in the 1934 Crystal Palace show, and was narrowly beaten for the championship.  Up to his death he was President of Rotherham Canine Society.  He had exhibited and judged at shows throughout the country.  Mr. Rawson leaves a widow and three sons.

The funeral takes place on Monday at Wath at 4 p.m.
