Mexborough – Stone-Clayton

A wedding of considerable interest to a wide area took place at Mexboro’ Congregational Church last Thursday, when Miss Marjorie Clayton (younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Clayton, “Ingle Nook,” Church Street, Mexboro’) was married to Mr. William Maughan Stone, only son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Stone, Morton Avenue, Mexboro’. The bride’s father is head of the well-known firm of provision merchants, and, trading in High Street, Mexboro’, while the bride has for several years been attached to the staff of Roman Terrace Infant School. The ceremony, which attracted many friends, was conducted by the Rev. W. Simpson, and suitable music was played by Mr. John Priestley.

The bride, who was given away by her father, was charmingly gowned in ankle-length ivory satin, with beaded bodice and sleeves, and her ensemble was completed by a diamante necklace, picture hat of crinoline with blue and pink flowers, and a bouquet of cream roses and white heather. The bridesmaids were Miss Doris Clayton (sister of the bride) and Miss Jessie Shaw (sister of the bridegroom). Miss Clayton wore an ankle-length gown of duck egg blue crepe, with large picture hat of tone, and carried pink carnations, while Miss Stone had a gown of buttercup yellow crepe, fashioned with crinoline hat to match, and carried yellow carnations. Each also wore a diamante necklace, the gift of the bridegroom. The bride’s mother had chosen a floral ninon ensemble, with black hat, and had a bouquet of yellow roses, and the bridegroom’s mother was dressed in a navy blue two-piece suit with hat en suite, and carried red roses. The best man was Mr. H. E. Williamson, and the groomsman Mr. F. Clayton Berry.

A reception was held after the ceremony at the home of the bride’s parents, and later the couple left for a honeymoon in London and Bournemouth. The bride travelled in a fawn blue two-piece ensemble, with floral gown, and hat to tone. Among numerous handsome gifts they received were a pewter tea service from the Mexboro’ Secondary School staff, a clock from the Mexboro’ Congregational Sunday School teachers, and a dinner wagon from the staff of Roman Terrace Infant School.
