War Souvenir Mishap
Mexborough Man’s Shrapnel Wounds
An old war souvenir was the cause of an accident at Mexborough, yesterday, when Edward Marden, miner, of Albert Road, Mexborough, was admitted to the Montagu Hospital suffering from multiple shrapnel wounds.
Marden was sorting out scrap metal in the workshop of Mr. Joseph Roberts, of Albert Road, Mexborough, on Saturday morning, and had fastened what appeared be a composite metal bolt in a vice in order to strip the brass from it. The hammering caused the projectile to explode, shrapnel flying in all directions- The vice was wrecked and one large piece of metal went through the bedroom window of a house opposite, in Lorna Hoad, to bring down considerable quantity of plaster from the ceiling.
Marden was got quickly to hospital by Mr Roberts and, subsequently, was reported being fairly comfortable.
The projectile was in a load of scrap bought at a sale last week at Swinton, and from examination of the scattered pieces it appears to have been shell end or one of the earlier types of hand grenade.
