Defenders’ Lapses at Wakefield.

Mexborough, at Wakefield last night, were beaten 2-1. Reeves, the visitors’ inside-right, was injured early on, and took no further part in the game. Wakefield City had the better of the argument throughout, and should have put on a much bigger score.
Whitaker scored with a long shot for them before the interval, and after the resumption Smith put in a clever drive from the right wing, Graham, the Mexborough goalkeeper, knocking the ball into the net. Later Middlehirst, the Wakefield left-half, in attempting to clear, put through his own goal.
Mexborough had a glorious opportunity to equalise from a penalty, but Walker shot high over the bar. From this point onwards, Wakefield controlled the game
