Twenty-Five Years’ Service

After nearly 25 years’ service as secretary to the Governors of Mexborough Secondary School, Mr. I. W. Chipp at the monthly meeting of the Governors held yesterday tendered his resignation.

Mr. Chipp was educated first at the Mexborough National School and then at the Haddington Collegiate School at Brighton in Sussex. After leaving School Mr. Chipp entered the office of Mr. J. W. Hattersley, solicitor. Mr. Hattersley was appointed secretary to the Governors when the Secondary School was in its very early stages; the School being then carried on in various buildings in Mexborough, the Public Hall, the Primitive Methodist School, Waddington’s Rooms, etc. The pupils then numbered 80, and the staff consisted of Mr. T. W. Ireland, M.A. (the former headmaster) and Miss Crowther.

On the resignation of Mr. Hattersley as secretary to the Governors in April, 1913, Mr. Chipp was appointed to succeed him.

The School has grown very considerably during Mr. Chipp’s term of office; the pupils now numbering 780 and the staff 38. The reason for Mr. Chipp’s resignation is a proposed alteration on the administrative side of the School.
