The Good Old Sound
When Mexborough licensee Mr. Cyril Scott has had a hard day behind the bar of the New Mason’s Arms in Mexborough, he likes to relax, put his feet up and listen to the top ten…of 50 years ago.
The sounds of George Formby Snr, Vesta Tilley, Harry Lauder and Harry Champion issue loud and clear from the old phonograph which used to make the party go with a swing when granddad was a lad.
“The phonograph belonged to my grandfather and is at least 50 years old” said Cyril “but it’s perfect and the music comes out loud and clear.” He added “It’s a little tinny, but only as tinny as the early gramophones.”
For the technically minded the Edison-Bell phonograph can go at two speeds, has two playing heads and has diamonds to play the records with instead of needles.
