The Cost of Collecting a Pension

It is costing 1s 2d (7p) for pensioners living on Mexborough’s Clayfield Estate to collect their pensions – for the nearest post office is one-and-a-half hilly miles away. Many old people live on the estate and the Council are planning to build another 100 bungalows on it, many of them for pensioners.

The Clerk to the Council, Mr. Bob Davis, agreed that there is a need for a post office.  “A lot of old people live there and the numbers will be increased soon.”

Mexborough Councillors took a sympathetic view of the situation this week and recommended that the Post Office be asked to provide a sub-post office on the estate.
