Stealing Turnips

Mexborough & Swinton Times – Friday 24 October 1902

Joseph Houston (13), and Percy Ellis (15), pit-lads, Mexborough answered to summonses issued at the instance of Alfred Mawson, charging with having stolen turnips, at Adwick on the previous Sunday.

The defendants, in reply to the Bench, stated that they picked the side turnips up outside the field.

P.c. Kinder said he saw the defendants in the prosecutor’s field, and when they saw him they ran away.

The prosecutor stated that he had had nearly an acre of turnips carried away, and the thefts were increasing.

This Each defendant had to pay a sum of 12s 1d.
