“Star” Boys’ Treat.

Mexborough Public Man Who Was a Newsboy.

The Primitive Methodist Schoolroom, Mexborough, was crowded last night by over 100 ‘‘Star” boys, who were entertained to supper by the directors of the “Yorkshire Telegraph and Star and allied newspapers. The boys spent a very happy evening.

Mr. A. W. Morris (editorial representative Mexborough) presided, and seasonable wishes on behalf of the firm were extended the boys by Mr. I, Booth (superintendent of district branch offices).

Mr. S. Silverwood (chairman of the Mexborough Urban Council), who had cordial reception, said he was proud to have risen from being a newspaper boy to the position he now occupied as chief citizen of the town. (Applause.) In his day as a boy newspaper seller they had no fine functions they were enjoying that night. If they did their work honestly and straightforwardly, and were enterprising, they would get on. Play the game all the time, and then you will find happiness in the New Year, he added, amid applause.

Club Dr. J. J. Huey (Medical Officer) diagnosed the work and opportunities of the “Star” sellers correctly. “You boys,” he said, “do a great service to the community. You are the connect, link between the important events the world and this town. You distribute through informative agencies all the news, and you are an indispensable part of a great organisation. Yours is no mean calling, and if you use it wisely you will have the better equipment for future advancement.”

A vote thanks to the directors was proposed Mr. J. Venable. The boys afterwards attended the pantomime the Mexborough Hippodrome.
