Speech Day At Mexborough
Prof. F. H. Shera Addresses Secondary School Scholars.
Mexborough Secondary School Speech Day on Wednesday was held without the usual gathering of parents, war-time restrictions preventing invitations from being issued. Instead, the school hall was packed with students—and staff. The principal speaker was Prof. F. H. Shera, Professor of Music at Sheffield University, and a Governor of the School. The chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr. J. Ledger Hawksworth, presided.
Mr. Hawksworth referred to the unhappy state of world affairs, and to the kindness of Prof. Shera in rearranging his visit when Speech Day was postponed towards the end of last year. He spoke of the progress of the school and of education generally. He had serious apprehensions with regard to the future of education, and felt they should do all in their power to bring an end to the war, and come back to common sense.
