Brother and Sister With Forces

Mexborough Record

Brother and sister of a Mexborough family, Richard Otley, only son, and Margaret Jane Otley, daughter, of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Otley, who are caretakers of Doncaster Road Infants’ School, are “doing their bit” in national service.

As noted in our last issue, Miss Otley joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service in June, was called up at the outbreak of war, and is now stationed in Essex. She has signed for four years, and expects shortly to be sent on foreign service.

Mr. Otley is already on active service abroad, He has seen seven years’ Army service and was called up as a reservist. He is married, and has a young son. He attended both Doncaster Road schools as a boy; Miss Otley is an old student of Mexborough Secondary School.

In a letter home this week, Mr. Otley says he is keeping fit and looking forward to leave at Christmas—if that is possible. There is champagne for the asking at about half a crown a bottle, but foreign cigarettes are not up to much.
