Prisoners After Arnhem

Three Mexborough men, reported missing at Arnhem, have sent word home to their families that they are prisoners.  Mr. and Mrs. J. Glennon, of 37, West Street, Mexboro’, received the regulation postcard from their youngest son, Private Thomas Glennon (26), telling them he is fit and a prisoner. He joined up in 1939 and was evacuated from Dunkirk.

Cpl. H. J. Scales (26), son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Scales, of 25, Arnold Crescent, Mexborough, also says that he is in the best of health.  Mr. and Mrs. Scales have received letters from his officers, in which they praised his fortitude under heavy fire.

In the same prison camp as Cpl. Scales is Cpl. John Charles Mills (30), whose wife, (formerly Miss Sally Bell), resides with her mother at 55, Addison Road, Mexborough.  He was evacuated from Dunkirk in 1940 and has fought in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. He was one of the Commandos who raided Dieppe.

The first news of his safety reached Mrs. Mills in the form of a War Office telegram, followed by a Red Cross report, that his name had been quoted over the German radio as a prisoner.  Finally, she received the postcard from him in which he says he is quite well. He has a month-old daughter whom he has not seen.
