Verses By The Boys

Private H. Webster, formerly of Roman Terrace, Mexborough, and now of Doncaster Road, Goldthorpe, was called up in September of last year. “I am having a great time (he writes) . . . I expect we shall soon be going over the ‘Fishing Pond’.”

Private Webster (who at one time attended Roman Terrace School), encloses a poem “composed by all the lads in the barracks room.” entitled “Just carry on,” a patriotic little verse which tells of the job their fathers tackled in the last war, and concludes:

“. . . . But in spite of all this
We will each carry on
The work which they began:
And although it may mean sacrifice, We’ll march on till we’ve won.
So I’m sure boys, if we carry on. Do our best, don’t lie down, nor retreat,
I know very soon we all shall be
Back in Bonny Civvy Street.”

“Hoping to read it next time the ‘Times’ is sent to me. I wouldn’t like to miss the paper for all the world.”
