Mexborough and Swinton Times August 18, 1917
Mr and Mrs John Thorpe, 26 Victoria St, Wath Road, Mexborough are represented in the Forces by six Sons and a son-in-law.
The Thorpe’s are a well-known family, and Mr Thorpe has been for many years employed as a winding engineman at Manvers Main.
Five of the six sons are married and the homes of all of them are in the Mexborough district.

The eldest son Sapper William Thorpe (Royal Engineers), Victoria Rd, Parkgate, is 42 and has been services November 1915. He enlisted in the Tunnelling Car has served almost continuously in France since he joined the army. He has had one short spell in hospital with trench feet.
The son-in-law is Lance Corporal Albert Pyott (K.O.Y.L.I.), 6 Victoria St, Wath Road, Mexborough, who enlisted in November 1914, was wounded at Loos, and has been slightly wounded since. He is 25 years of age and before enlistment was a miner employed at Manvers Main.
Private Edward Thorpe (Northumberland Fusiliers), Victoria Street, Wath Road, Mexborough, married, aged 26, enlisted in April 1916 and stationed in England. He was formerly employed at Wath Main.

Driver George Thorpe (M. A.S.C., M.G.), the youngest and only unmarried son, is aged 20, and lives at home with his parents. He was formerly a fitter at Manvers Main. He enlisted in April 1916 and in June last was on his way to the Front when the transport which was conveying him was torpedoed. He was picked up by a Canadian boat and taken to Canada, returning to England two or three weeks ago. He has since been home on leave and return to unit this week.
Private Robert Henry Thorpe (York and Lancaster), Chapel Street, Parkgate, married aged 30, was formerly a miner at Warren Vale. He enlisted in November 1914 as seen all this active service in France. He was wounded in the leg at Ypres in April 1915.
Private John Thorpe (York and Lancaster), married, aged 34, is a Reservist, and served throughout the war. Before mobilisation he was employed as a miner at Manvers Main. He says through out the South African came campaign.in 1914 in the early stage of the war, he was bullied, but was only slightly injured, and has not sustained any further mishap. He has served both in Salonika and in France
Private Fred Thorpe (York and Lancaster) Wath Rd, Mexborough, aged 28, married, formerly a miner at Manvers Main, enlisted in November 1914, and has been twice wounded. He has also had a touch of frostbite. All the service has been in France.
