Mexborough Man’s Success

Lieutenant John Charles Swingler, elder son of Mrs. Swingler, of 15, Derwent Terrace, Mexborough, and the late Mr. C. Swingler, has done well in his Army career.

He was no stranger to Service life when war broke out, for after being educated at Mexborough National School and Dolcliffe Road School, and working for three years in a shop in Mexborough High Street, he joined the Scots Guards in 1930. He served his seven years, reaching the rank of sergeant, and then joined the West Riding Police Force, serving at headquarters at Wakefield, and at Castleford. He was recalled to the Colours in December, 1939, and for 18 months was an Instructor in the Army physical Training Corps.

He was recommended for training as an officer and he later went to Sandhurst and was commissioned First Lieutenant in e 1941 to the Duke of Wellington’s Regiment. He is now with another famous infantry regiment and recently spent his embarkation leave in Mexborough. He is a widower, his wife, a Wakefield girl whom he married in November, 1939, having died two years ago.
