Mexborough and Swinton Times May 18, 1918
Pte. W. H. Phillimore
Durham Light Infantry
Private Phillimore, 5, Greenwood Rd, Mexborough Mexborough was killed in action in France on March 28.
He was 19 years of age, and enlisted in May 1917, going to France in January.
He was formerly employed as a porter at the Wombwell G.C. station, but was more recently engaged at the Mexborough station.
His sister has received a message of sympathy from Col. W. D. Lowe as follows:
“I very much regret to inform you of the sad loss of your brother, who fell in action. March 28. while digging on a ridge which it was essential to hold, and which has been successfully held by us.
He was buried near where he fell in ground belonging to us. He had been for some time with the battalion and was not only popular with his comrades, but was a capable and enthusiastic Lewis-gunner. He was one of those men whose loss it is so difficult to replace for he had the complete confidence of his officers.”
