Repatriation Journey Ends at Sea

Pte. Albert Edward Newby, a Sunderland soldier and formerly of Hoyland and Mexborough, was on his way home, leaving behind him the grim ordeal of three years in a German prison camp. But his repatriation was not completed, for 53-years-old Pte. Newby died during the crossing and was buried at sea.

News of this tragedy was the first information received by his wife and family, who live at 76, William Street, Sunderland, that he was one of those being repatriated. His brother, Mr. David Newby, 49, Main Street, Mexborough, heard the news this week.

Pte. Newby was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Newby, Mr. Newby having a fishmonger’s business in Hoyland. For a while he lived in Mexborough and moved to Sunderland 15 years ago. He served throughout the last war and volunteered for the Pioneer Corps in the early days of the war. He went to France in 1940 and was taken prisoner at Dunkirk. Pte. Newby leaves a wife and three children. i
