Convivial Gathering at Mexborough
Sgt Richard Jones
some 30 friends of Sgt Richard Jones met at the Royal Oak, Mexborough, on Saturday evening, to celebrate his homecoming.
Sgt Jones has been in France since the outbreak of war. His many and trying experiences have left their mark upon him, but they have not abated his optimism as to the result of the war.
He joined the army in 1899. Saw service in Africa 1902, Malta 1903, Crete 1904, South Africa 1906 – and was mobilised 1914, went to France with the K.O.Y.L.I.
Being a time expired soldier, he was granted a month’s furlough, and rejoice at Hull. His greatest wish is to see the thing through and the old country victorious.
At the gathering referred to, the chairman, in well chosen remarks, paid a high tribute to Sgt Jones’ patriotism, and spoke of the noble sacrifices made by the gallant soldiers and sailors.
Among the friends present was Sapper J Briggs, R.E., who has served 12 months in France, and was on leave, but returned on Sunday.
A splendid musical programme was much enjoyed.
