One of the First

Signalman Leonard Johnson, son of Mrs. and the late Mr. G. F. Johnson, of Lower Dolcliffe Road, Mexborough, was one of the first Mexborough boys to be called up for training under the Military Training Act, prior to the outbreak of war.

When the British Expeditionary Force was, sent to France, Leonard, who had by that time received his training in, armaments, went with them and on the collapse of France had a lucky escape from St. Nazaire. Since his return to this country Leonard has continued his training and has achieved further proficiency.

Before joining the Forces he was a linotype operator on this newspaper. He is married and has one son, his family residing at 23, Dodsworth Street, Mexborough.

Leonard has quite a few sporting achievements to his credit, both as a footballer and cricketer. He was also a keen cyclist. He has played football with his unit.
