2 Wellington Street, Mexborough has been killed in action in France.

His widow has received the following letter from a comrade:

“It is with deep regret that I have to inform you of the death of your husband. He was instantly killed by a shell while nobly carrying out his duty in the trenches. By his death we have lost one of the most trustworthy soldiers in our company, and we horse you to accept our deepest sympathy in your bereavement.”

Prior to enlistment, nine months ago, private Hill was in charge of the Oxford Billiard Saloon, Mexborough. He enlisted in the Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment, and was little later transferred to the York and Lancs. He has been in France since October

He was 23 years of age and leaves a widow and one child.
