97 Schofield St, Mexborough, has been killed in action. The news was conveyed to his wife in a letter from a chaplain as follows:

“I am grieved to have to tell you of your husband’s death. It happened of May 16. A shell exploded and killed your husband and two of his comrades. He has been laid to rest in a little cemetery. The battery is having a cross erected over the head of the grave.”

Gunner Dryden enlisted in January 1915 and went to Gallipoli the following September. He was invalided from there with dysentery. He went to France in March 1917, and was wounded in the left hand in August. He went back to France in March and was killed in May 16.

Previous to enlistment he worked at Manvers Main.

He was 24 years of age and leaves a widow and one child.

His brother Tom is with the York and Lancaster’s in Salonika.
