Another Heroic Engineer
Mexborough Man’s Fine Deed
Pioneer J. Bennett
of 26, Wilson Street, went to France last March, was killed in action in August 21.
He was 20 years of age. His father has received through Lieutenant PE Crofts the following letter:
“With very great regret and sympathy I write to tell you of the death of your son, private J Bennett, in action, on August 21. We were in a shallow trench, and suffered very severe shelling.
Two men were wounded and could not move, and your son with two others, volunteered to find stretches and carry them out. They had got one man to the dressing station, and returned for the other. It was then that your son was killed.
He was struck by two large pieces of shell, and died instantly. He laid down his life for his friends.
I pray that it may be a comfort to you to know that he died, not only doing his duty, but going beyond that, offering himself willingly to save his comrades. I can assure you that his loss is deeply felt in the section. He always did his work cheerfully and heartily, and was one of my most reliable men.
His brave action has not been overlooked, and I have done my best to assure that it shall be recognised in the honour’s list. Please accept my deepest sympathy for such a loss and my deep respect for just such a noble death.”
