Sapper William Alfred Stephenson Archer (27), only son of Mr. and Mrs. F. Archer, of 52, Windhill Crew cent. Mexborough, has been mentioned in dispatches “in recognition of distinguished services in connection with operations In the field, March to June, 1940.”

Sapper Archer, together with Corporal R. Bullmore, is understood to have blown up a bridge within a few seconds during the fighting at Dunkirk. He is now serving In Madagascar and took part in the raid on that island.

Sapper Archer has been in the Royal Engineers for three years, enlisting before the outbreak of war. Prior – to enlistment he was a miner at Barnburgh Main Colliery.

Born at Mexborough, he attended Dolcliffe Road School.
