Soldier – Adamson J.– Killed In Action

October 1917

Mexborough and Swinton Times October 13, 1917

Private J Adamson
West Yorkshire Regiment

Private Adamson, 29, Kirby St, Mexborough was killed in action on August 28.

He was single, aged 19, and was formerly employed in Messrs Barrons glassworks Mexborough. His parents have received the following message of sympathy from Private H Booth:

“You will no doubt by now have received the sad news of your son’s death, but I’m taking this opportunity of writing to tell you a little of his fate.

He was killed on Sunday about midnight, and his death was instantaneous and painless. He was hit in the heart by one of the enemies machine gun bullets. Being one of his platoon mates, I helped to dig his last resting place, and I am able to tell you that he had a decent funeral. He was buried in the Divisional Cemetery, about 2 miles from where he was killed.

I’m writing this because I think it will lighten your sorrow to know that he had decent funeral. The burial service was conducted by the Divisional Chaplain.

I wish to tender you the heartfelt sympathy of the whole platoon.”
