Smallpox Epidemic 1927
This district passed through its most costly epidemic of smallpox in 1927, with Mexborough the centre of the outbreak; and below was a familiar scene during several months when old and young of both sexes were being whisked off almost daily to a quarantine that was both irksome and costly. The district ratepayers. paid several shillings in the £ as a result of the outbreak.
