Mexborough Shooting Sensation.
Miner Fires at Constables.
Sergeant Shot
Amazing Affair in Street.
At Mexborough last night, about half-past ten, an extraordinary and exciting affair took place in the street.
Three police officers. Sergeant Matthews and Constables Haigh and Burrows, were standing near the Theatre when a young miner, Harold Carr (24), of Flowitt Street, approached, and, it is alleged, producing a revolver, fired three shots, aiming first at the sergeant.
The bullet struck Sergeant Matthews (picture) from point blank range, and entered his side. Constable Haigh rushed at the man, who fired again. This time, by remarkable good luck, the bullet glanced off one of the buttons of the policeman’s tunic, merely scratching his wrist. A third shot was fired which passed through the sleeve of Constable Burrows’s coat.
The man was overpowered, disarmed, and arrested. At the police station he was locked up, while Sergeant Matthews was conveyed to hospital in a cab. The affair has created the wildest excitement in the district.
