She Was Mexborough’s Oldest Resident

After a very short illness Mrs Florence Platt, Mexborough’s oldest resident died at her home on Tuesday morning.

Well known for her devotion to Mexborough Bank St, Methodist Church and as a teacher for a considerable number of years, she would have been 98 on April 19.

There are also six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild.

She lived with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs Tom Venables, at 115, Adwick Rd, Mexborough, and even at her great age she was a regular attender at Bank Street. She was also keen an her almost daily walk, and took one only two days before she became ill.

Born in Mexborough, the daughter of a schoolteacher, she herself went into teaching before she was married and during the First World War she went back to teaching (at Dolcliffe Road Junior School).

Her husband, a joiner and undertaker, died 20 years ago.

She was extremely fond of music, and apart from playing and teaching the piano, she had been a member of several choral societies, including Wath and Denaby.

Three years ago she laid the foundation stone of the new school rooms of Bank St, Methodist Church.
