Sheffield Daily Telegraph – Tuesday 26 November 1929
Second Mexboro’ Champion.
“ Iron” Hague’s Win and Reception Recalled.
There was great excitement and enthusiasm outside the “Sheffield Telegraph” offices at Mexborough last night when the news of Crossley’s great victory came through.
The “Yorkshire Telegraph and Star” was the first with the tidings, and the special edition of the paper was eagerly snapped up. Last night’s rejoicing recalled that far-back night when “Iron” Hague, of Mexborough, won his heavy-weight championship by knocking out Gunner Moir.
Following the achievement, Hague had wonderful reception on his return to Mexborough, and no doubt Crossley will be quite as enthusiastically received on his return to his home town. Crossley was prevailed upon to remain in London last night and he will return with a Mexborough party to-day.
It was not certain last night whether the Lonsdale Belt will be presented to him to-day, Crossley and his manager will visit the National Sporting Club offices in Covent Garden at 12.30 and hope to catch the 1.30 train from King’s Cross, which arrives in Doncaster shortly before 4.30. If they miss that train they may come by the 1.40 or 4 o’clock, which reach Doncaster 4.50 and 7.12 respectively.
From Doncaster they will travel by car to Mexborough.
