Mexborough Sailor’s B.E.M.
At a recent investiture at Buckingham Palace the British Empire Medal was presented by the King to Leading Seaman Stanley Wright, 18. Belmont Street, Mexborough.
Leading Seaman Wright was awarded the B.E.M. early in September after being in the Navy seven years. He was in the “Hardy” when she sailed up the Narvik fiord, and he was also in on the chasing and sinking of the “Bismarck.”
Before going to sea Leading Seaman Wright attended Swinton Bridge School, and later worked at Denaby Main Colliery.
He is a typical member of the Silent Service declining to say anything about his experiences beyond, the fact that the investiture proceedings were “wonderful.”
